Viña Santa Carolina was founded in 1875 by spirited, Chilean business visionary, Mr. Luis Pereira Cotapos. The name Santa Carolina was born from his wife and great love, Mrs. Carolina Iñiguez Vicuña. At this time, winemaking in Chile was really coming into its own. Although wine had been present in South America since the 1500s, it wasn’t until the mid 1800’s wine was widely consumed outside of religious purposes. Rich Chilean families were inspired by the French society including their luxury and love for good food and wine. As a result, Pereira decided to start vineyards in Chile with the classical Bordeaux grape varieties such as Cabernet and Merlot, and bring French viticultural expert, Germain Bachelet. The house in which Bachelet resided still remains a part of the Santa Carolina properties. In 1975, Viña Santa Carolina was purchased by the prestigious Larrain family; by 1986 Viña Santa Carolina was one of the top Chilean brands exported to the US and has remained among the top Chilean brands ever since. Today, Viña Santa Carolina is the 4th largest exporter of wines from Chile with 23% of the wines coming into the US and Canada alone. In 2005 Viña Santa Carolina hired Chief Winemaker Andrés Caballero who brought with him the philosophy that great winemaking is based on innovation, fruit quality, terroir expression, vineyard management and quality assurance. Under Andrés’ Caballero’s guidance, Viña Santa Carolina underwent a renaissance of quality. He has carefully explored each area of Chile from the Limari Valley in the North to the Maule Valley in the South examining terroir and climate in accordance with each varietal. Viña Santa Carolina owns 650 hectares (1600 acres) of vine and sources fruit from an additional 1,000 hectares (2,471 acres) throughout the country to ensure the highest quality. Experimentation and expertise has set Viña Santa Carolina apart from its competitors. Although Santa Carolina is now more than 130 years old, it’s never been so young and dynamic. Tradition and history are not just a façade but are in fact at the heart of everything the winery does while innovation remains an inspiration. This is what Viña Santa Carolina refers to as “Chilean Heritage”. Viña Santa Carolina has a great diversity across its portfolio offering over 35 different wines across several price points featuring the grapes Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Malbec, Carignan, Chardonnay, Syrah, Carmenère and more. Each wine has been carefully selected from a region best suited for its development based upon the vitacultural findings of Andrés Caballero and his winemaking team. Celebrating over 130 years of winemaking, Viña Santa Carolina has become an inspirational wine brand from Chile that consistently meets consumer expectation across all key price points from value to ultra premium.
