Pessagno Winery fulfills a twenty-year dream of winemaker Steve Pessagno to produce limited quantities of exclusive luxury wines from prestigious single vineyards throughout Monterey and San Benito Counties. Pessagno Winery is a small, family-owned winery that is best known for their fabulous Pinot Noir’s and Chardonnay’s. The grapes that make up these delicious wines are grown in some of California’s most famous vineyards. The inspiration for Pessagno Winery is attributed to Steve's grandfather, Anthony Escover, who introduced him to winemaking on the family's Santa Clara Valley ranch in 1974. "How vividly I remember crushing overripe Zinfandel grapes - stems and all - into 500 gallon redwood tanks, and I'll never forget the enticing aroma that filled the barn during fermentation," Steve recalls. In a fateful serendipitous moment with two of Steve's closest friends, the essence of Pessagno winery was conceived. The three founding partners formed what would become Pessagno Winery in January 1999. In January 2004, a two decade long dream was realized by finalizing the purchase of their own winery in the heart of Monterey County’s Santa Lucia Highlands. The 15-acre winery complex includes four small estate vineyards, ample facilities for the tasting room, the ability to host private events, and ample space to expand their wine production. As Steve Pessagno says, “We are truly in the midst of what has become one of the world’s premiere wine-growing regions. This is the perfect place to continue handcrafting our vineyard–designated wines and do our part to promote the local food, wine lifestyle and regional charm.” Using the philosophy of small batches and big wines, Pessagno has established themselves with a reputation of excellence in the industry. Their numerous award-winning wines include the 2005 Intrinity Chardonnay, which scored in the top 58 out of 100 in Wine Enthusiast Magazine, the 96 Point 2006 Four Boys Estate Pinot Noir, and the most recent award winner, the 2007 Idyll Times Zinfandel, which received 96 Points from the Beverage Testing Institute. The Pessagno family invites you to visit their estate winery and tasting room, located sixteen miles south of Highway 68 on River Road in Salinas. The tasting room is open Monday through Thursday, 11am to 4pm and Friday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm. The beautiful, two-bedroom Highlands House is located on the property and provides for an excellent and convenient place to stay while in the area tasting the wonderful wines up and down River Road.
