Way back in 780 CE, Charlemagne’s advisor, Saint Benedict of Aniane, founded the first vineyard in the Gassac valley. Indeed, there are good reasons to believe that he introduced Charlemagne to some of the valley’s early wines. Thus, in common with most truly great wines, the Daumas Gassac Grands Crus were born under the aegis of a prestigious Abbey.

- 2005 Mas Laval, Vin de Pays de l'Herault
Fabulously rich, velvety-black fruit flavours and notes of liquorice and vanilla are the hallmarks of this meticulously-made, blockbuster Syrah-Grenache-Mourvèdre from Christine and Joel Laval. Their small but prestigious Mas Laval vineyards lie on the same exceptional soils as famous Mas de Daumas Gassac, and production standards are just as high: this was aged for 18 months in barrels used for a year at top Burgundy estate Domaine de la Romanée Conti.

Celebrated Languedoc 'Grand Cru', Mas de Daumas Gassac is home to iconoclast Aimé Guibert, who carved vineyards into the herb- scented, tangled thicket ('garrigue') pervading his ancient estate. Disdain for the varietal-proscribing laws of appellation (which, he says, guarantee nothing but mediocrity) finds expression in gems like this rich blend of seven different grapes.

A modern classic from the Languedoc. Rhône meets Bordeaux, falls in love, and cocks-a-snook at all New World pretenders. Divine. Laurent Viaille quietly brought this neighbouring estate of Mas de Daumas Gassac up to a remarkable standard of quality. Without fanfare it has achieved cult status and limited allocations are eagerly snapped up by a dedicated public.
