Carlos Pulenta has been referred to as the "Robert Mondavi of Argentina." During his seven years as president of Salentein, a Dutch company with three bodegas, he increased the number of European varietals, installed the latest technology, and put Salentein wine on the tables of the world. He left in 2004 and returned to his family's land in Vistalba, where he built his own bodega in the middle of the vineyard. The courtyard entrance frames a perfect view of the 4,900-meter (16,000-foot) Cordón de Plata mountain range. More than a bodega, the light stone and polished concrete complex houses an ultramodern 12-room inn, perhaps the best restaurant in the region (La Bourgogne), elegant meeting rooms, an underground salon for private parties, and a conference center. Inside the bodega, glass walls expose the tumbled rocks and dirt that Malbec thrives in. You'll find architectural surprises around every corner as you explore the cellars. Pulenta and his team of family advisers and oenologists have created three blends using Malbec, Cabernet, Merlot, and Bonarda, plus a delicate Sauvignon Blanc.
