Sicily features excellent highways (look for the green road signs) and Taormina can be reached by car from every main Italian City. From northern Italy one can drive along highway A1 through Naples and Salerno; then from Salerno (the Amalfi coast and Capri area) drive along the panoramic free highway A3 in the direction of Reggio Calabria. Take exit Villa S. Giovanni - Sicilia, then go to the harbor. From the harbor take one of the ferries which run very frequently. The Caronte company is the most recommended. (Park and lock your car on the ferry and enjoy a fantastic ride from the sun-deck, it is very safe!) You can connect to the mainland of Sicily (Messina) 24 hours a day.Returning from the war when it was over my father made this passage by hitching a ride on a boat full of fisherman by bartering his baptismal necklace in exchange for the ride.
