Mulino delle Pile was built in the early 13th century by the monks of the neighbouring serene abbey, ensuring the people of Chiusdino, in addition to a place in which to mill their grain, somewhere to stiffen linen for sale in distant market. This activity was performed well into the 15th century. The mill takes its name from the stone containers named pile in which the mechanism of the fulling mills, activated by a hydraulic wheel, beat on the fabric immersed in a special solution to shrink it. The mill has become well-known as the location to advertisement for Mulino Bianco products. The original architecture of the mill has been restored and it now offers a warm, elegant welcome to guests, who can gather in small spaces in the old, elegantly refurnished tower, or in the lounge in which they can converse by the fireplace, just like in the old days.A museum bears witness to the activities of the historic building.The rooms, each with its own bathroom, are furnished carefully in a plain style, and offer maximum comfort. Turn left immediately after to the entrance to the farm.
